Hi, I have the same problem – I translated the en-EN.po file in Bulgarian with poedit, uploaded the new files, named bg-BG.po and bg-BG.mo, in the theme folder and checked the language in the wp-config file, but it doesn't work. The "language file" option is On. Any suggestion ?

arleuein, the file should work from the newsmag theme folder as long as you have your WordPress language setting in wp_config set to French. If it's not working you can email it to me and I'll see if I can get it to work and document the steps I took for you to duplicate.
