There is a new update available for News Magazine Theme 640. Version 1.6.5 improves the thumbnail functions to allow for images to be re-used from the media library. Previously if you inserted an image from your media library and that image was not in the gallery for the specific post the image would not show up. In version 1.6.5 this has been sorted out so now, if you already have images uploaded that you want to re-use you can just insert them from your media library and they should be displayed.
Working on fixing it so you can also use remote images (images linked to from sources outside of your server). This ability is not currently present so if you have images in your post that have a remote/external URL those images will not show up on the homepage.
Version 1.6.5 also adds a new option to the admin for those of you using News Magazine Theme 640 in blog mode. If you want to include the author and date byline under the title for each post shown on the index page you can activate this option from the admin. It is made optional as some people want the byline and others do not.

Ah, I get it about the default widgets.
Now — if I want magazine theme, how to I get rid of the boxes with the X’s in them, which show that the thumbnails aren’t uploading properly?
I don’t want any thumbnails to show. I just want the post titles to appear in each category. How do I do this?

Laurie, I am not always so fast, just in case you post one of these days and I take a few days to respond. I just happen to be on at the moment but do sometimes take a bit of time to respond.
Regarding the thumbnail question, you can’t remove the thumbnails altogether, but if you don’t want the “no image” graphic to show up for posts that don’t have an image, you can set that from the theme options under “State of default no image thumbnail“

On all my blog posts, I feature a book image with a direct link to Amazon. Your theme displays the book cover in the post and in individual pages beautifully (eg, when I click a cagegory page). But, that book cover is causing a problem in the front page.
How do I control which thumbnail shows up? That is, how can I override the book cover and insert a chosen image thumbnail?
This is my last question, I promise! The rest of the theme seems to work great….

Laurie, you might be having a problem with the cropper that is affecting a number of other people. The individual pages and non-magazine mode do not use the cropper but in magazine mode a cropper file is used to crop the images to specific dimensions and it appears to be giving some problems to a few people. For some the problem is server based. For others it appears to be something else in the cropper file. It will be hard for me to guess what might be causing the problem. I’ll be happy to take a look to see if I can figure it out, but it will require me to have backend access to your files. I see you are using the alternate cropper file. Can you try switching the cropper file to 1 and the cropper function to 1 for testing?

jennyd, there isn’t an easy way to turn off the narrow sidebar on the posts page. You would have to edit single.php to achieve that goal.
jennyd, thank you for your info though not sure what fix in particular caused your site to crash. The fix for the date issue has been applied to header.php and can be downloaded from the link below until the theme is updated with the fix.

Is it possible to have multiple index pages on one blog? I have created a static front page and want to have pages that begin with the newspaper index page, with each index page posting separate information. For instance, this website I am making will report information on three separate counties, so I would like a separate index page for each.
I thought a solution would be to create multiple blogs and link them to the front page. I just wondered if there was an easier way to have the multiple index pages on one website. Any advice?
I would like to link an image I want to upload to the Tier 2 space to another page. What steps would I need to take to enable visitors to click to the referred page?

cheryl you need to wrap the image code inside anchor tags as in the example

Is there perhaps a FAQ on this theme that I’m missing? I don’t want to ask redundant questions if avoidable – so apologies if I missed it.
I’m building a publishing platform with wordpress-mu for a group of professional writers and artists. I like the clean & professional look of this theme, as well as the style. I’ve installed it on the site and am currently assessing it to see if it fits the needs of this project.
1) Do you know of any issues that would prevent this theme from working with WPMU? I would like the “front page” category boxes to draw from specific categories on posts by multiple users.
3) I’ve noticed that when the window is re-sized – as it inevitably will be – that the edges of bg.gif image become visible and the background loses its continuity. Is there a fix for this other than to remove the background image and have a solid color? The gradient is quite nice and it would be a shame to lose it.
3) Google AdSense- if we use it. Is there a feature within this theme, or is it supported through widgets?
4) The category images on the front page – are they static or related to each individual post? If they are pulled from the post, then are they able to be re-sized without distortion?
artsfish, I don’t know of any issues that should prevent the theme from working with WPMU. Yes, there are options in the theme for adding your adsense code to display within the theme. The images are related to each individual post and are cropped. There should be no distortion.

I have enabled featured category #6 under tier 1. This results in 10 “Recent Posts” showing under tier 2. Question:
- How do I change the number of recent posts that appear
- How do I change the content to something other than recent posts under tier 2?

James it’s not clear what you mean by “recent posts”. Do you mean recent for the featured category or just recent random? Or are you referring to the sidebar?
Hello, thank you for this theme.
Two questions if I may.
1)I have what might be a strange and basic question. Where do we put the images that we want to appear next to the features? I did not see any info or instructions on where these are to be uploaded. Also, are the images that are displayed for these features always the same ones or do they vary, if so, what determines this?
2)On IE6, the right hand sidebar is appearing underneath the posts, instead of to the right. Is there a quick simple fix for this? If so, what is it?

Gavin, you don’t need to manually manage the pictures for them to show. In other words, if your post contains images they are supposed to be getting picked up automatically. If that is not happening you might be having a problem with the cropper.
Regarding IE, I will try to remember to get it looked at for the next update.

Re IE6, I have fixed the problem by cropping the #postsidebar from 210px to 200px in the style-ie6.css file, this now works for me.

I am having problems getting the blog display width to fit my screen without having a scroll bar on the bottom to move the blog display in order to see all of the content.
Is there a way I can limit the width of the blog presentation so it stays in the middle of the screen without spilling outside of the screen? Is this possible with three columns?

I setup the site on Blue host today–and love the template for News Magazine 640
I am new to this, so please excuse my silly questions.
I finally figured out the categories and set them up. However as soon as I use my categories, I lose the beuty of the original setup.
For example if I set up a category called USA–instead of Featured Category #1–everything that you have so nicley setup goes away. How can I emulate your entire format—for all the categories. Also how do I load my own pictures so that the look and feel of the site remains the same.
Additionally, I want to see recent posts,most popular and and a rss feed in a widget showing where you have blog roll. How do I get this done?
Any help will be appreciated.

I added the plug-in “adsense integrator” but it doesn’t seem to work.
Where do I put the code from google adsense so that it shows up on the individual posts on the site.

rich, there is an option in the theme options page for single page ads. You insert your ad code there. I don’t know how “adsense integrator” affects the theme or vice versa.
I am using this theme for two sites:

My question:
How do I get the page navigation at the bottom to appear like it does on jimcamut.com/blog. If you look at ManifestWell.com, the posts just keep listing and I only want 5 excerpts per page.
I would like the little navigation option that says:
”Page 1 of 5 1 2 3 4 5 »”
Did I delete it somehow by accident? Of do I need more posts for this function to appear? Any help would be appreciated.
Jim, there’s a setting in WordPress under Settings->Reading where you set the number of posts you want to display on the homepage.

I am using your theme, and I’d like to be able to see what comments I make and or when I edit a post on the initial front page of the blog, I can see this fine when I click and go into a post, but want to see it on the outside.
Michael, will take care of the comments issue on the index page in the next version of the theme.
It would be great if the thumbnail code could be upgraded to support multi user wordpress. The lines are in the featuredX.php includes. Here is the code that works for wpu – if you could enable a switch in the setup that would be great!

Barbfmc, not sure what you mean by sign up logos, but for the rss feeds, if you mean the ones tied to the feed burner options in theme options, they are in the sidebar attached to the Extra Content Row so you need to activate the Extra Content Row.
Cropper option 2 worked for us in every spot but the Latest Topics sidebar. Any suggestions? Thanks – student newspaper and they’re thrilled with the look.
