News Magazine Theme 640 has been upgraded to version 1.5.9. Included in the update are IE 6 fixes. As reported by some of you there were a number of IE 6 display issues with the theme. The reported issues have been fixed in version 1.5.9. Also in version 1.5.9 there is now an option from the theme options page for you to switch between the two functions available for preparing thumbnails for display so you no longer need to email to request the file with the alternate function. Just go to the theme options page and navigate to the option “Thumbanail Function Switcher”. If you still don’t get the thumbnails to work feel free to use the contact form to request direct assistance. Direct assistance does mean that access to your server will be necessary in order to try to pinpoint the problem.
There is a new “optional” row for content in version 1.5.9. If you find you need to feature another category and have more sidebar widget content on the index page, you can refer to “Activate Extra content row” in the theme options page.
There has also been a fix for the site logo. The textbox to add the link to your logo was missing in previous versions. Please continue to report bugs as you find them to help improve the functionality of News Magazine Theme 640 for yourself and other users.

Hello and thanks for a great looking template. It’s been a long time since my last blog and this may just be a simple user error – but my Featured Category Number 1 – set to category Welcome – is not displaying the text of my entry. I originally installed version 1.5.4 – then came here updated it to 1.5.9. I thought maybe it was I.E. – but I don’t see the text in Firefox either. Do I have to activate something for it to display on the front page? It shows the title Welcome and if you click on this you see the page with the entry – it just doesn’t show on the front page. Thanks again for a great template – I’m sure I’ll be back for more when I start getting the hang of this again. Brian

Just downloaded and installed 1.5.9 and have found a few things:
Admin replies in bold
1) Sorting non-custom comments in DESC does not work – even though there’s an option in W to do this. Is the theme overiding this value? I do not believe the theme is overriding the order of regular WordPress comments as it does not attempt to process any function associated with comments except for it’s own custom comments; however if you find evidence to the contrary please let me know and I will take a look
2) Comment numbers in IE7 are under the avatar (they are only visible for as long as it takes to load avatar) I will try to investigate and fix this as soon as possible. The fix will not be available in the most recent update (version 1.6)
3) Number of posts in cat 6 is off by one – so setting to 3 displays 4 Again will try to have this fixed for the next update after version 1.6
4) Header line is off – Blog Title and tagline no longer aligned This was an intentional design modification due to the display errors that were being had by quite a number of people with long website/blog titles. The tag line was moved below the title rather than beside it. If you preferred it beside you can edit header.php to bring it back into the same DIV as the title then edit style.css to change the float and other postioning elements.
5) On single, the number of pages is displayed as “Pages: X X X” – but in search & category lists, number of pages are displayed as “Page X of X: X X X”. This qualifies as a personal preference and can be handled by editing single.php and page.php to modify wp_link_pages() which is a different function serving a different purpose from the paging system used in search.php and archive.php.
6) Still appears to be some conflict with WP-Polls in IE. See this page travelblog/where-should-jay-go-next/
Cannot promise to be able to check this conflict with WP Polls immediately, but will make every effort

Numbers 1, 3 and 4 are in fact user error – no issues to resolve here.
As for #5 (pages) – when I add the wp-pagenavi call I get “Page 1 of 0″ with no page links. Since wp_page_links does not support the display of the number of pages – an addon has to be used. Since you already include wp-pagenavi – shouldn’t that code work?
Jay, I have not attempted to use the code from wp-pagenavi to handle posts with multiple pages.

Nia, sorry for the delay answering. I am not quite sure if you mean to ask whether or not you can use a graphic instead of text for your blog title. If so, then yes, there is a “Site Logo” option in your theme settings. Simply enter the URL that points to the file of the picture you want to use.

Hi Fran, sorry for the delay answering your question. If you mean how do you go about setting what categories you want to appear in the featured sections of the home page, you do this by going to the theme options page from your WP Dashboard and filling out the options for Featured Category #1, Featured Category #2, Featured Category #3 and so on

Can you take a look at this url? In the comments sidebar, the latest comment entry has the incorrect avatar. If you look at the avatars from teh actual comments list – the avatar is correct. Are these using two different functions? If so, there appears to be a bug in the sidebar version.
Jay, not having any luck duplicating any problems with avatars in comments. Will check again to see if I might be overlooking something if other complaints are received about the same problem.

Is there a way to call images from a fixed location into posts? A service I use to generate some content within posts automatically calls images from a specific folder. It is a relative call from within it’s contents to a folder called tn_images. Is there a CSS change I can make?
In what way will this uppgrade affect the older version? I have made language translations?

mavervorl media, technically you could go into the individual files in /includes, in this case featured1.php and adjust the height and width value that gets posted to the cropper. Look for cropper.php then look for h= and w= in that link and change as needed; however, you can expect problems with the layout if you increase the image sizes. The theme design uses sizes that are configured to fit within spaces that have specific sizes, so if you enlarge an image in all likelihood the enlargement will take the rest of the elements in the space out of alignment.

Rudy, simply paste the code for your image into the related options from the theme options page. Make sure it is the full HTML code for the image.
When using the extra content I get an error message above the thumbnails (though it does display the thumbnails). The error message is:

Hi, great theme. Have been using it for a while but only recently noticed a problem with the site search option. My site is a collection of recipes and cooking tips and advice and when I tried to search for particular recipes eg. dips, the results I got back were completely irrelevant, eventhough I have dip recipes none came up?
Yvonne, are you having this problem with the search only with the News Mag theme? For example, if you switch to the wp default theme for testing, does the search work differently?
I love this theme! I am a complete novice and find it pretty easy to figure out. The Theme Options are great and meet all of my needs. However, I’m having the same problem that Brian and Justin are having, in that the text for Featured Category #1 isn’t showing up on the home page the way it does in your example. The instructions in the example say the excerpt text will be used and it shows a thumbnail image, but it doesn’t work that way for me. I don’t know how to put a thumbnail in the excerpt either. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Regarding the problem with Featured Category #1, if you are referring to the bigger of the 2 thumbnails displayed within the Featured Category #1 block, that featured post only shows the thumbnail and title of the post. It does not show an excerpt. If you are referring to something else please clarify.
Thanks admin, I figured out why the search results are showing irrelevant results. It seems that any posts with the searched keyword in it is shown. I got a plugin that hopefully will work better.
I’m having the same issue as others have reported with posts not appearing on the index page. The category name shows up and the posts end up on the category page like they should, but do not appear on the index page. Has anyone figured out the solution for this yet?
Scott, Is this with any specific featured category or all? I’m not 100% clear on what the problem is. If you could explain in greater detail it would better help me to find a solution.

Julie, not clear on the problem you’re experiencing but wonder if the number of posts you actually have in the category tied to Featured Category #1 might be the probleml.
First of all thanks for the great theme. Looked everywhere until I found the News Magazine Theme. However I’m having trouble with
1. titles of posts appearing only as one or two words – frontpage, categoty #5, extra categoty, latest posts and (narrow sidebar). It’s hard to figure out what the posts are about with just a word or two of the title.I want all the title to apprear
2. how do I add in space between image and title in category #4 and 5?
3. how do I make more words appear in latest comments other than just a couple of words.

Everytime i change the logo to url on my server and even on picasaweb, it never loads the image on there. Not quite sure why this is. I include the http and everything. Not sure why this would be happening.

Kai, all layout elements are handled in style.css. Look for instances of width:990px and adjust as needed but be mindful you will have to make other adjustments as the other elements will not adjust themselves fluidly.
How can I use your theme and have inserts/comments that I made per a post show up in the post, with out having to click on the actual post and then see my edits

Hi, I love this theme, but unfortunately cannot make the transition yet, I have two problems, I hope you can help (only the first problem is holding me back from changing theme today)
1. How to I link the featured categories on the home page, to a particular page. for example ; if my featured category 1 is RENTALS, i would like the user to be directed to the Rentals page, If Featured category 2 is Jobs, I would like to be directed to the Jobs page. I’m sure this is a simple question, and probably one for a wordpress forum, but I see you keep up to date with your responses and would like to make a full theme switch this weekend.
2 (not critical) Latest topics – no images appear, i have no problem with the home page – the image is taken straight from the post, should the Latest Topics thumbnails work the same way?
if you can help (in particular with question 1) i would be very greatful, i’m eager to have this excellent theme up and running.

KEvin, the category titles should already be linking to the category pages if I’m understanding you correctly.
