News Magazine Theme 640 has been updated to version 1.5.3. The update fixes a few issues and prepares the theme for translation. Among the issues addressed, there was a problem with the narrow sidebar. It was picking up the widgets from the sidebar used on the index page. It is supposed to be picking up the widgets placed in the widget box titled “SidebarNarrow”.
Some people were having problems with the images not displaying. The function that prepares the image for display has been modified to make it work on a wider range of servers.
In some cases images were overlapping the post details box on when viewing single posts. This has been fixed.
The preparation of the theme for translation is still a work in progress. If anyone needs the default POT file that’s currently available contact me via the contact form and I will email it to you.

Hi TC, yes, as long as you haven’t made any modifications to any files you can just overwrite. If you did make modifications you will need to remember to re-apply your mods to the new files.

However, I am having an issue that another user was experiencing but that I guess they resolved and no further information was given about the fix.
In column 1 posts to that category are showing up but also posts from other categories which are not assigned to that category are showing. I have double checked the category assignments on the posts but they are still mixing up.
Any idea on how to fix this?

Everything was fine till i’ve updated to News Magazine Theme 640 v 1.5.3 yesterday, running on WP 2.8.4. Now images from cropper are not showing.
Hi jose, I’ve emailed you another copy of functions.php to try. v 1.5.3 is using a new function for the images. Looks like the new function does not work for you.

1- Suppose I have total 2 categories in the site. How do I configure the home page? I must display the same posts again and again?
2- If I dont have an image, or do not want to display many images. Still the main page shows default image. So I should change the code for this?
3- The only configurable sidebar for homepage is ‘home page sidebar’?
4- It would be easy to discuss support topics in a separate forum where other users can also participate based on thier topic of interest. You never know when you will be too busy with the support for commercial designs. You must have seen the huge downloads this theme is getting now. I love this theme (after rejecting 50+ free magazine themes in last one month) and would contribute to answering simpler questions in the support forum.

Currently it is 302 redirect.

brand new site, 1st post, using news magazine layout, shows headline and picture but the excerpt doesn’t show (featured category #1), yet it does show the 1st line of the excerpt in ‘latest posts’ on the article’s page.
any clue? I’m still preparing and adding content but like I said, this issue is with the 1st post of a brand new site. I do want that post as my ‘headline post’ (the other content will be in other categories, for now…)
Hi Lazarus, I took a look at the site. Looks like you might be having the problem some others have reported where featured category #1 and featured category #2 are getting mixed up. I expect to have the update to that released tomorrow.

Hi Deepak, sorry for the delay in answering your questions. For the question about how to handle situation of only 1 category and if you can just put your own HTML into the individual featured files, yes, you should be able to put your own html in without breaking anything, but you might also need to modify home.php where the included featured files are being called. I am considering this issue you’ve brought up of how to handle it when someone uses the theme who does not have enough categories to go around. Will definitely address it at the core level.
I looked inside the include files and feel easy to modify. But what do i need to change on home.php?

Deepak, The included featured files are conditionally called depending upon the category settings so you will probably have to modify the code to remove the condition that the file should be included if category is set. If you view home.php you will note that there is an else alternative for if the condition is not met. You could modify the else code with your HTML codes instead of modify the include files. This way if category is not set, your alternate code will execute.

Hi I installed New Magazine Theme 640 on http://www.loveengineer.com, with out very many problems. – However I have uploaded it after to http://www.refined-life.com and am having problems getting the pictures to show up. Currently they are broken links and am lost why this happens. Both sites are running on the same server. Can you tell me why this is happening?
Also when I add a picture often the html caption code is showing up in the article posted.
Hi Joanna, are you using the same version of the theme on both sites. In the most recent version the function that handles preparing the thumbnails for cropping was changed and it seems the change is not as universal as I had hoped as some people who were able to see the thumbnails using the original function cannot see them using the present function. So if the first site has an earlier version from the last that could be the problem and the fix would be to go into functions.php and look for the function prepsimageurl($src). You should find 2 functions with the name. One is commented out and the other is active. You will want to comment out the active version and uncomment the inactive version. If this sounds like an undertaking you’d rather not attempt I’ll be happy to email you a copy of the file with the fix applied.
If both sites are using the same version of the theme then something else would be amiss, but here again I will need to actually check your site to find and fix the problem.

second question, and more important really… is there a way to have adsense in the posts in much the same way as the top leaderboard/tier 2 120 can be used for it? i.e. a section in the options panel where adsense code can be pasted?
failing that, can you recommend which plugin to use to add adsense to posts?

Lazarus there will be no difference in the appearance of your page if you upgrade. Upgrading is recommended because it addresses any bugs that might be in earlier versions. Layout will never be changed in upgrades. Only bugs will be fixed so it’s best to upgrade to take advantage of bug fixes.

I posted this under the Thumbnail situation, so I will re-post here.
In order to get the thumbnails to show, they have to all be thumbnails, and then turn off the Magazine-style feature, you will find it on the Dashboard toward the bottom titled “New Magazine 640″, that’s where you do the edits, I’m sure people are aware. When I turned off the magazine for a few seconds and turned it back on, ALL of the updates to the photo images were restored. I hope that this helps anyone who is reading this.
Now… if I can only figure out how to decrease the blog title’s size, and increae the sub-title size, then I’m good to go

In wich area are the excerpts handled? And what what controls that some headlines are shown and some not.

Patric, the excerpts are configured by reading the post content and taking the first x number of characters with x being on a preset number of characters coded into the function that sets up the excerpts. The headlines question: it was a design decision.

Admin perhaps I explained bad. What i mean is that the excerpt for #5 and #4 don´t contain any Headline. Just long excerpts.

Chris, please use the latest version of the theme and report back to me if you are still having the problem. The version available via the downloads page is the latest version. If you downloaded from here but you are not using version 1.5.9, you need to download again.

I am looking for the place where I can add the images to show. Right now the place for all the images tells me “no image”. I have looked up and down but I am not finding the place to load the images I want to use.
I thought maybe it would take the image from the post, but that didn’t happen either.

Amit, you can make all style changes for this theme in styles.css. If I am understanding correctly what you are trying to change, they you need to refer to the classes #nmag-navbar and #nmag and their sub classes
First, thanks for a great theme, I love it. I do have one problem, though. I have created several pages (not posts) and they show up in the bar across the top. That’s cool for most, but there’s 2 that I don’t want to have included up there. How can I un-include them?
TJ, you will need to edit header.php at around line 50. Look for wp_list_pages(‘title_li=&sort_column=menu_order’); and modify to include the IDs of the pages you want to exclude:
wp_list_pages(‘title_li=&sort_column=menu_order&exclude=1,2′);
In the above example you’ll see exclude=1,2,3 you will need to change 1,2 to the IDs of the pages you want to exclude.
This will have to be redone with each theme update so you might try to see if you can find a plugin that allows you to filer wp_list_pages

Amit, I am not sure if I am understanding your question fully. If it is what I think you’re asking you don’t have to do anything different from what you normally do when you post. As long as your post has an image and the image is not being pulled from an offsite location or a location that WordPress has no data about your images should show up

1. What is the suggested size for a logo to replace the header section.
2. If I do not use the logo and instead just go with the default of the blog title being displayed, is there a way to change the color of that text being displayed.
3. Lastly, the picture/text combination you have in the demo at the leaderboard section is just amazing. Is there a way I can do something similar of combining picture with text for the leaderboard. I noticed that the leaderboard space in the settings page takes html, is that what we should be doing to get the picture/text combo?

1. As long as you keep it at or under 990 pixels in width you should be fine.
2. You will have to edit style.css to change the color of the text.

The day and date are about 12 hours ahead of my time zone how can i fix? This is just on the newspaper heading i’m est(new york)It’s all set up properly in the settings.
also i was posting in size 11 font and all was well then i made my last page post on my training page,11 also, but when i went to view site everything came up in 9 and thats two small to read plus i did nothing out of the ordinary.How can i fix that also. If needed i’l get you access to find the problem i just need it fixed those two problems.I’m kind of afraid to add any more content just in case i have re-du it all. when i go back to edit page/posts it all shows up size 11 in the edit window, nothing has changed there. The last page i edited is actually the smaller of the three i believe. Other then that i really like this theme.

Mike, were you asking about the logo or the leaderboard space? I believe my previous answer was made thinking you were asking about the leaderboard space. If indeed it is the leaderboard space the measurment is 728 by 90.
How do i exclude a category from the recent topics sidebar. I tried the exclude tag in the query but it broke the code.
Justin in recenttopics.php look for query_posts(‘showposts=’.$numlatesttopics); and add your exclude categories. If that is what you did initially perhaps you had an error that you didn’t notice. Try
In the example the -1,-2,-3 should be replaced by the actual IDs of the categories you want to exclude.

TSZ, your comment is posted about News Magazine Theme 640 but it looks like you’re using Producer. It also looks like your image is aligned center already.
Admin, It actually was for both. Leaderboard and logo. So the leaderboard image has to be 728×90. The logo width is 990, what would you suggest for the height?
Mike, you can really make it any height desired as the rest of the page will adjust accordingly, but I imagine 100 pixels would be ideal.
I love your theme. I just hope I can do it justice. I’m new to this and have been trying to figure out how to have the pictures in the posts appear on the front page. I thought they would pick up automatically. Maybe I am not familiar with the terminology or something in the options area. Please provide a step-by-step for me. Thanks.
Ellen, the images should pick up automatically. It looks like you have the alternate cropper file set to 1 and the alternate cropper function set to 2. Try setting the alternate cropper function to 1 and see if that makes any difference.
