In answer to questions about how to get images to show in News Magazine Theme 640 when running with the magazine layout turned on, you do not need to do anything differently from how you normally do it. As long as you are attaching the images to your posts by uploading them from your computer using the Add an Image -> Add media files from your computer in your post editor, the last image you upload to your post will display automatically.
If the image is not showing up it might be because your system is not able to process the function that prepares the image for the cropper to display. In that case there is an alternate function you can try so use the contact form to request the file with the alternate function.

Hi Steve, I am wondering if this is a general WordPress question? The theme itself does not add thumbnails to categories, only post excerpts on the main page and in latest comments and recent topics sidebar widgets.
I cannot find the amdinistrative option to add a thumbnail to categories. I understand how to add thumbnails to posts but not main categories. Please help.
Hi Steve, which categories do you mean? The theme only uses thumbnails with post excerpts.

Awesome theme. It will custom right into what I’m going to need it for. The issue I am finding is that SECTION #2 does not appear in some browsers. Here are examples:
In EXPLORER 6.0 and also MAXTHON you can’t see section #2. In the link provided that is the left side of the example.
In FIREFOX on the right side it shows up.

I am having a strange problem with this theme. If I add an image to a post everything goes okay until I publish the post. Then whenever the post page is up the browser asks for a password. The thumbnail on the front page shows up without any problem or strangeness, its just the full size image that doesn’t want to render without a password.
YOu should be able to go to the site and see what I am talking about.
I am thinking it has to do with write permissions somewhere maybe?
Any clues?
Les that is indeed very peculiar. Have you verified first that this is happening only when you are using News Magazine Theme 640? There is nothing in the code that I am immediately aware of that would create a situation of prompting for a password. Are you sure you do not have the post itself set to require a password for reading? Do try switching to a different theme and let me know if the problem indeed is only with News Magazine Theme 640 activated.

I wonder what Steve did when he said he added a bunch of photos to the posts, and then they updated. My page is updating everything else BUT the thumbnail.

I had this issue with resized images not appearing as thumbnails on another wp theme, it seems that some host servers have issues with the coding.
It can be fixed in your cpanel if you are savvy with apache instructions, and you know which mod_security lines to use.
Alternatively you can phone or email your hosting company explaining the issue and they should change the mod_security settings on the server for you, mine were sorted within an hour of my email, guess I was lucky.

I tried it out in two other themes and it worked fine. Now get this. When I switched back to your theme it was working okay.
I’ll keep you updated as I add content. This is what it did before, it worked okay on the first post and then on subsequent posts went haywire with the logon thing.

Yup, as soon as I uploaded the image for the second post it asked for authentication, right there in the control panel. (did I mention this same behavior also happens in the editor in the control panel?) It does the same thing on the public facing site. Before I checked it out on several different computers and browsers, all with the same results. It’s unfortunate. I really had high hopes for this. I have looked at all the server settings and can’t find anything that would affect this. Unfortunately, I know little PHP.
I also tried in the News Magazine Theme 640 options in the Dashboard turning off the News Magazine Layout and viewing the site and it displayed but also asked for a password.
I’m kind of at a loss here. Any ideas? I haven’t seen any posts from anyone having any problems remotely related to this.
Do you think it may be some issue I need to take up with my host? I wouldn’t know where to start with them.

Kimmy, if you downloaded the theme from wordpress.org you don’t have the latest version. Please download the latest version first to see if that fixes your problems with the thumbnails. You can download from the downloads page.

Hi Mike, can you re-download. Current version is 1.5.9 which includes the ability for you to switch to the alternate function from theme options. I don’t think you downloaded 1.5.9 as it was uploaded a short moment ago. Let me know.
is it possible to change the picture size in the featuered cats. wether the picture is an upright format or landscape. like:
if picturesize h<w then h=99 w=200 else h=150 w=70
because there is always a problem if you have landscape and upright pictures mixed in the feature cat.
Michael, you can play with the settings in the files inside the folder includes to see if you get the desired results. There is no way to change them from theme options at this time.

Putte, not possible to know what the problem might be without checking. If not of the resolutions discussed on the site work for you it’s quite possibly an issue with your server; but again, cannot say without checking directly.
Hi, I checked with my webbhotel and they said they needed to know what the alternate function is and can be downloaded. Is there something else needed to be installed on the server to get the thumbnails be exposed on the mainpage? Please let me know.

Putte, you do not need an alternate file. That was from a previous version. The current version has an option in theme options for you to switch between the two functions.
I’ve tried activating your theme, which I like very much, except for one issue. On all of my posts, the LAST image in the post gets displayed with the excerpt, not the FIRST image. Almost always, the first image is the appropriate image to use…if I upload what will be the first image at the top of the post LAST, will it become the displayed image? Or is there another way to accomplish this?

Andrew, yes, the theme uses the last uploaded photo, so if you upload what you intend to be the first image last it should work.

Dave, there is no longer a separate alternate function file. You can go to theme options and switch between functions. Which version of the theme are you using?
I tried both functions 1 and 2 from the dropdown and am getting broken images. It is trying to use cropper.php with src pointing to correct location but still no images. Is there a way to drop cropper.php from being used? BTW I’m on windows 2003 machine with current versions of wordpress/php/mysql and using newst theme from http://www.antisocialmediallc.com download page.

Arif, look for the tier2 settings in style.css. You should be able to increase the height by adjusting all explicit height values in the tier2 classes

I do have a question — on one of my stories, in tier 2, under the category “WMD,” I have two photos in the story. The second photo is appearing as the thumbnail. But I want the first one to appear as the thumbnail. Is there a way I can do that?

Sara, you can only control that when you make the post by uploading the picture you want to show in the excerpt last or it might be first. I’m not 100% certain right now but it’s easy to test. Just upload a new picture and attach to the post and if the new picture replaces the current then it’s the last uploaded picture that gets displayed. Otherwise it’s the first uploaded picture that gets displayed.
Okay, thank you for the advice. I did make it work the way I wanted, by deleting the pictures from my post, THEN deleting them from the Gallery/Attachments for that post (which meant that I had to delete them from the Media Gallery all together and re-upload them).
I then put them into the document in “reverse order”, so that the one that I wanted to have as the thumbnail was the one I inserted last.
That was inconvenient, unfortunately!
Perhaps you have no plans for improving on this feature, but if you do, that would be awesome. As I understand it, as of WordPress 2.9 there is now a “thumbnail” function. I’m using it in another website I manage, and I like it, but I haven’t tested out all of its functionality and am not sure it would necessarily work with your Newsmagazine stuff. On the site where I’m using it, there’s an additional box on the right-hand column of the post editing page, titled “Post Thumbnail,” and I can add a thumbnail there — also, while I am Inserting pictures into my post, there is a “Use as thumbnail” selection next to the “Insert into Post” button. So, that works really well. I’d love to incorporate that with Newsmagazine but given how integral thumbnail-generation is to the way you’ve put together the theme, I would be afraid to try to re-do it myself.

*the one thing i cant get around is the Latest Topics thumbnails – this is something i would like to solve now, but not sure how to fixed, ive googled to see if anyone has had similar issue but no solutions. Again, it’s probably something simple.

Kevin, the warning error message is due to the missing search box. Please check your folder for the file searchform.php. Is it in fact missing? I will check on the thumbnail issue
I really like this layout, but I have a stupid problem. I cannot get the excerpt to appear on the featured category 1 section. I can get the image to appear and the title of the entry, but not the excerpt. If I change the category of the entry it appears properly in one of the other featured areas; just not in section 1.
Only the image and picture is displayed for featured category #1 in right-side position. No excerpt is shown there.
